Will the original coarse bur work for cutting/grinding M42?

Thank you for the question about Kutzall Original tools. The Kutzall burrs are referred to as "carbide burrs," because their unique abrasive coating is made of tungsten-carbide. However, they are not like traditional carbide, fluted burrs, with which veteran machinists, die makers, or welders are so familiar. The Kutzall coating is actually made from a steel-cutting grade of tungsten-carbide, however, the tungsten-carbide on a Kutzall tool is structured into upright teeth, shaped a bit like tiny icicles, in order to cut wood and other non-metals well. This makes these teeth subject to breakage when attempting to grind steel, cast iron, and other harder materials. The only M42 material we are aware of is a high-speed tool steel. Thus, we are quite certain that the sharp little teeth on a Kutzall bur would fracture or shatter off in trying to machine this material.

Kutzall burrs are usable, from a material-removal standpoint, at the operating speeds of drills. However, operating at such low speed greatly reduces their ease and smoothness of control. We generally find the Kutzall Burrs to be okay at drill speeds for DIY work, but not so much for creative work such as carving. The best performance will come when operating between 10,000 - 25,000 RPM.

Hard to find Rotary Burr

I was looking for a rotary rasp for some woodworking projects. Could not find rasp, but found this burr. Works very well, and is built like a Sherman tank.

Removes wood fast but leaves a smooth surface: great!

This rotary rasp has a 21st century surface that cuts fast but leaves a fairly smooth finish. I also like that it doesn’t clog fast when cutting hardwoods. An excellent addition to my abrasive tool kit.

Not for Dremel tools!

In the Q&A, someone asked if this would work with a Dremel tool and the answer was "yes". Not so! This is a 1/4" diameter shaft. The largest a Dremel will take is 1/8th. Shame on me for not reading the description. Maybe I can use it with a drill? Or I can return it and take an $8 loss. I don't have the time to go miles across town in heavy traffic to take it the nearest UPS store.
