A haunting journey through grief and memory
Jeff Lemire’s Mazebook is a quiet, emotionally devastating graphic novel that explores the labyrinthine nature of grief. The story follows Will, a lonely building inspector still mourning the death of his puzzle-loving daughter, Wendy. When he receives a mysterious phone call that he believes is from her, Will embarks on a surreal journey through a maze-like version of Toronto, guided by her unfinished puzzle. Lemire’s sparse, sketch-like art style mirrors Will’s emotional fragility, creating a visual language that feels raw, personal, and deeply immersive. What makes Mazebook so powerful is its restraint. Lemire doesn’t rely on spectacle or melodrama—instead, he builds tension through quiet moments, fragmented memories, and symbolic imagery. The maze becomes a metaphor not just for Will’s search for his daughter, but for his attempt to navigate a life hollowed out by loss. Critics have praised the book for its emotional honesty and thematic richness, calling it a comforting yet unsettling meditation on mourning. For readers who appreciate introspective storytelling and minimalist art, Mazebook is a deeply rewarding experience that lingers long after the final page.
