How big are the numbers on this?  I currently have a metronome that has very small numbers on it that I can no longer read now that I am over 50.

I bought this model to study piano. The beat number is not small and not so big. The beat number has the same size of all other metronomes. This model is quality good and works fine. You can set beat 2, 3, 4 and 6 using the bottom on left. You can set the Bell on or off if you wish. The plastic body looks like wood indeed.

How/why is this metronome better than an electronic?

It depends on what you are using the metronome for and what features you are looking for. Some reasons to choose this mechanical metronome versus an electronic metronome are simplicity, ease of use, reliability and helps improve your timing better than an electric. Our mechanical metronome doesn't require batteries, nor trying to program electronics. If you have a child, teaching them how to use an electric metronome vs our mechanical metronome is much different. With electric, it's complicated but with the mechanical it's very easy to use. Secondly, our metronome comes with a 2 Year Warranty. It has durable, steel gears that are accurate and loud and most musicians prefer the sound of it versus the electric metronome. The pendulum (the piece of metal that swings back and forth) has been proven in many studies to actually visually improve rythm and more beneficial for practicing. The aesthetics of our mechanical metronome are preferred over an electric and it looks professional and elegant in a music room. These are only a few contrasts, yet again it depends on what metronome you need. If you are looking for a practice tool to improve your rythm and timing and practice with, this is the best way to go. If you are looking for a metronome with lots of additional, complex features, that would be the way to go. The Boss metronome is a good one for this ranging at around $130 on Amazon.
