The original Berberis thunbergii were introduced from Japan around 1864. There are now over 500 different species/cutlivars, in many shapes, sizes and colours. Over the years they have become one of the most ed of all shrubs. Berberis thunbergii Orange Ice is a relatively new dwarf cultivar, bred in Poland and a real gem among the modern Berberis varieties. It has a columnar growth habit. Depending on the light condtions and age of the foliage, it subtly alters colours between red and sensational orange hues with each leaf being edged in gold. This effect is especially noticeable at sunset. At the time of writing no other Berberis has this special feature. In spring, just as the leaves begin to emerge, it produces short racemes of small, dainty yellow flowers. In sun or semi shade and most soils, this easy to grow variety makes a great addition to any ing scheme where the leaf colour is in the design. Superb as a contrast in ings with other dark leaved Berberis. This can be used in a mixed ing or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or can easily be grown in a pot. When growing in a pot or other container. Use a good quality John Innes compost as this will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade and become too packed and choke the roots.
